Classic Chianti Is Finally Back: Podere Il Palazzino

Edoardo and Alessandro Sderci of Podere Il Palazzino.

WELCOME BACK TO ONE OF
CHIANTI CLASSICO’S TRUE XXX

PODERE IL PALAZZINO

IT’S GREAT TO HAVE THEM BACK!!!!

You’ll happily find modest-sized Podere Il Palazzino, a Chianti Classico benchmark producer, in the hills of one of sangiovese’s premiere terroirs in the commune of Gaiole, a bit sougth of the village of “Gaiole in Chianti”. Palazzino and their vineyards are in the same neighborhood and zone as Montegrossi and Ricasoli. In fact it Palazzino is a mere four miles away from San Giusto a Rentennano and about the same as the crow flies to Felsina.

Old schoolers recall the celebrated Chianti Classico triumvirate of Podere Il Palazzino, Castello dei Rampolla and San Giusto a Rentennano as producing some of the finest wines in all of Italy. They each still do. Regrettably, for too long, due to distribution foibles, all three “disappeared” from our market. Happily we’ve been able to bring back Il Palazzino - and at great prices (considerably more affordable than their triumvirate cohorts.

A 1990 bottle we had this past December - absolutely smashing!

2018 Toscana “Stagi” IGT
100% colorino - the dark blue-ish colored grape has been making its home in Tuscany for as long as any can remember. Back in the day, used primarily as a blending grape with sangiovese and canaiolo, over time a few forward thinking producers discovered its potential as a stand alone red. At home in Chianti’s singular galestro soils, the result here is pretty thrilling - licorice, depth and bold. Yes, very rare - 150 cases made. we have four. 94 pts from Galloni. $28.00

2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione “Argenina”
Splendid Chianti! Old school meets an updated curriculum. Hand-harvested grapes from a superb vineyard and made in older barrels, both large and smaller. From Galloni at Vinous, “when I taste the best the best wines here, I often wonder why more producers aren’t capable of this level of quality. Stellar.” $30.00
