CLASSIC BURGUNDY: DOMAINE BART
Not long ago we made a special side trip from Italy to visit Domaine Bart and tasted the entire line-up with winemaker Pierre Bart. The Bart style is wedded to tradition and goes away from new wood and toward wines of elegance, balance and authenticity of place. These are not big, dark, rich woody wines, but rather impress and satisfy with purity, complexity, length and charm.
The family home and winery at Domaine Bart dates from 1765, a full 24 years before the big revolution. Perhaps more importantly to 21st century wine drinkers, Domaine Bart is creating its own revolution in Burgundy, and in particular in the appellation of Marsannay. For reds, it is one of the top zones for value, and for Rose, Marsannay is the sole appellation in Burgundy allowed to use its actual Village name- in other words its a double barreled terroir for great wine and exceptional value.

Previously written about our 2014 vintage: As for our stash of 2014s, Burgundians know 2014 is a lovely vintage for Pinot noir and many think it the best since 2009. Decanter labels it "classic", the Spectator says "excellent", Galloni called it "a classic crop of concentrated, fleshy wines." For us, after tasting about 200 of the '14's in Burgundy, we love them. Not over the top like some recent vintages, 2014 is loaded with finesse and character. We adore how the place shines through in the best of them. When it comes Burgundy its hard to ask for more.
