It’s Hello Again!

With An Affordable Twist:
From A Chianti Artisan

EDOARDO SDERCI OF
GAIOLE’S PODERE IL PALAZZINO

Edoardo and Alessandro Sderci of Podere Il Palazzino.

As we noted in a recent message, you’ll happily find modest-sized Podere Il Palazzino, a Chianti Classico benchmark producer, in the hills of one of sangiovese’s premiere terroirs in the commune of Gaiole, a bit south of the village of “Gaiole in Chianti.”

While those wines are now almost all gone (click here to see online if of interest), we are happy to announce the arrival of wines close to winemaker Edoardo Sderci’s heart - and of his non-interventionist philosophy.

Arguably, the Gaiole hills of Tuscany’s Chianti Classico terroir is at the quality pinnacle of the zone. Edoardo has taken the best from his work with the sensational wines of his Palazzino winemaking experience and melded it with his ideas on organic farming. His drive to produce wines as transparently as possible to display the true character of his grapes and their unique “galestro” soils - make these new arrivals well worth tasting. And the pricing’s not too bad at all.

2020 La Casina La Girasole “Casina” IGT
100% Sangiovese. Back in the day, good “dusty tannins” were a highly desired trait for Chianti Classico wine. That dry textured essence, deep, balanced and with dark fruit, is still sought after. That quality has gotten hard to find: what with new oak, outside additions to wines and other actions taking away from the grape and the ground. Here, with his Casina, Edoardo looks do the opposite - to take away anything that takes away from the wine, from the place and from the flavor of the grape and the influence of the ground. This is not an easy thing to do, as too many temptations exist to manufacture something for popular tastes. But what if popular taste gravitated toward more natural wine, toward wines more true to the place wine comes from? Do try Edoardo’s 2020 wine, it’s a winner. Certified organic, medium-red colored, from Gaiole’s galestro soil (brittle, sandstone, marl), Casina overdelivers. $19.50

2022 Azzero IGT
In his Azzero wine, Edoardo adds to the fruit of his Monti-In-Chianti Gaiole sangiovese vines, about 5% of Colorino, Canaiolo and Malvasia Nero (the two former classic additions to the Classico designation). A hint darker than Casina, and with a spicy, earthy kick, Azzero is also a terrific value red. Made in stainless steel tank only (no oak) to preserve freshness and real fruit. Only $22.00
